Teddy's America
I recently read a post that included words of Teddy Roosevelt, "A person who says they are American, but something else also, isn't an American at all". That creates an extremely limited view of what an American is and shuts out the history of every human living within the areas of the USA. Teddy Roosevelt did a lot of good things for America, he is often recognized as one of our better presidents. However his statement has some issues. In his time there was no Irish American, just micks and paddy's, there was no African American, just negros and colored; there was no Asian American, just orientals. He believed in white superiority despite the fact that he did a few good deeds to support a select handful of blacks during his time as a leader. He definitely was not thinking of any Native American when he said American.
The post also mentions that foreign flags are being raised everywhere. I have to remind myself here that every state has it's own flag, as well as schools, professional sports teams and many other groups in our society. Each of these flags is a symbol of separation, yet we have spent years waiving them while still united under the American flag. If we remove all foreign flags that show separation, that will include Irish, British, the Confederate flag definitely has to go for its lack of unity. Every other European, African, Asian flag, and Australian too. People who have moved to America from other countries often try their best to be as American as possible, and that is hard because we are often cruel. Still, it would be strange for them to have no sentiment and not hold on to a little bit of where they came from.
The post also warns about fires in streets. I find it interesting that the post mentions this, especially when we consider that streets have been destroyed following sports events, with cars overturned, set on fire and many great acts of destruction in the name of our favorite teams. We Americans gets riled up over so many things and make more messes than any minority group could muster alone, because there are way less of the minorities than there are people who speak one of the accented dialects of the English language we call American.
Unity starts with neighbors and we can work on spreading love instead of saying that someone is not allowed to remember their heritage while they embrace the American dream. We can share this land and this beautiful world that we live on, which shares life with us.
The statements in the post are separating rather than bringing together, it seems racist and some people find it hurtful. we should continue to mix together all the cultures that are making up the communities throughout our country, it enhances the wonder of our neighborhoods, cities and the food on our tables with ever expanding variety. Otherwise, if we really want to remove that variety and return America to those who first discovered it, we need to give it all up to those Native Americans who remain. Though I hope we can all work together for the growth and betterment of society through acceptance and understanding. Our differences make us beautiful and add to our nation, they do not take away from it.
